I was rereading Adam Hamilton’s Unafraid and was reminded of this story. Thus, I am going to take you back to childhood days, well, at least my childhood days. I have always loved to read and one of the first books I can remember reading, or maybe it was told to me, was Chicken Little (also known as Henny Penny). Do you remember it?
A hen named Chicken Little is scratching the ground one day when an acorn falls on her head. Startled, she declares, “the sky is falling!” and runs off to tell the king. Along the way she meets her friends: a rooster, a goose, a duck and a turkey and she tells each one that the sky is falling. Each in turn is seized by fear, and a kind of animal hysteria breaks loose. Fear led these poor animals to suspend all of their logic and they lost all of their common sense. Fear will do that to you.
They continue on their journey to tell the king of the news. On their way, they meet a red fox, who offers to show them a shortcut to the palace. Their fear kept them from making the right decisions and kept them from seeing straight and recognizing the fox as their predator. They follow the fox right into his den where they become dinner for the fox’s family.
This story has an interesting history as it has been told for over 2500 years. It was told in every age because humanity has always struggled with fear. Today, I know that we are living in a time when it feels like the sky is falling. We are afraid but we cannot succumb to our fears. We must seek calmness and trust that God will give is that peace. The Psalmist writes: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change… Psalm 46:1-2 (NRSV).
“No, Henny Penny, the sky is not falling. God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble. That’s why we don’t have to be afraid, even when the world seems to be falling apart.” (Unafraid)
The sky is not falling, the sky is not falling, the sky is not falling. God is our refuge. God is our refuge. God is our refuge. I shall not fear. I shall not fear. I shall not fear. God is our strength. God is our strength. God is our strength. God is present. God is present. God is present. Are you getting the message? 😊

“God grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days.” (v.2, God of Grace and God of Glory)
