Our Missions

“10:33”

We have another new addition to our church.  It is a volenteer group called “10:33″.  You maybe asking why 10:33, look into your bible – Luke 10:33, that will explain everything! Adults from the small group “Live Like You Were Dying” decided we needed to serve others. So, we’re a group of individuals that want to help & serve others, just as God commands in Luke 10:27. When you need something done you can contact us. We can do major or minor things – just contact us. For example, you need windows washed, light bulbs changed, trim painted, whatever. We’re starting with only our church family and depending on how things go, we’re open to expanding to others.

We’re doing service to others, we’re not for hire and we don’t carry insurance or anything
like that. If supplies are needed you are responsible for the cost of supplies and getting them. If you need help getting supplies, that’s something we could offer to help with as well. If you’d like some help with something, please contact Randy & Rose Mouw.  They will contact the entire group and make arrangements.

YOUTH MISSION TRIP

We wanted to say thank you to everyone that supported our youth on their Hannibal, MO mission trip. They met some amazing people, did some home improvement projects, grew closer to Jesus Christ & others that started as strangers but friends in a week. They have become close friends with many from the Lancaster Presbyterian church & looking forward to activities with them in the future.   Plans are being made to make another trip next year too!

This Months - MISSION EMPHASIS

Red Bird Mission School

SOS

Greetings from Red Bird Mission School. We are a small school located in the mountains of southeast Kentucky. We are a private Christian school that serves grades K-12. Our school is totally ran on donations from individuals, churches and businesses. Due to the decline in donations we are experiencing a shortfall this year of 1.2 million dollars and unless we raise this amount of money we will not be able to open our doors for the 2010-2011 school year.

We, at Red Bird Mission School need your help! Not only do we need your support now, we need continuing support. Red Bird School is very unique in the sense that we are one big family. Most of our students go through 12 years of school together. We form bonds and friendships that last lifetimes. We also teach the word of God. One of our students said “I love going to Red Bird School. I have so many friends who are just like family to me. It’s a great school to go to learn about God and get an excellent education.” This is just one of many quotes students have made over the years. We need your continued support in order to keep our doors open. Please continue to support Red Bird School.

Rev. Andrus and Rogena are so concerned about this shortfall and possible closing. Rogena, being raised in the E.U.B. Church, has been acquainted with Red Bird Mission all of her life. It has become our favorite national mission project. We have visited Red Bird several times. Our last church had a work mission at Red Bird.

All of the teachers at the school have left more lucrative jobs to give their lives and talents to providing an excellent education for the youngsters, many of which would not be able to attend school without the resident student program provided. Over 400 high school and elementary students K-12 are served. We are so proud of our church offerings to Red Bird Mission in recent years:

2007 Giving: $1,789.06

2008 Giving: $1,25.25

2009 Giving: $907.77

2010 Giving: $432.48 so far.

A goal of $500 for Septembers offering would greatly help in an urgent time of need.

The cans found in the offering plates, on Sunday mornings, are being used to collect funds for the monthly offering. Donations of more sizeable amounts can be placed in an envelope, marked “Red Bird-September Mission, and sent to the church office, or put in the offering plates on Sundays or can be placed in the basket by the sanctuary doors each Sunday.

In closing, Rogena and I , have visited Red Bird School and feel it is one of our most

outstanding National Mission projects, in the United Methodist Church. Here is a bit more

information about the school from the Red Bird Mission Newsletter:

“In an area where 50% of the adults do not have a high school education and illiteracy is more usual than unusual, we must bring education to the young who are willing to learn. In our school, more than 80% of the students come from low-income families. With that in mind, this letter is dedicated to describing the work of our teachers in changing lives and witnessing for Christ through their work.

At the Red Bird Mission School, students are given the opportunity to learn in a positive school environment that is staffed with teachers who have a heart for mission service. This

attitude is introduced in Early Childhood Development and continued through elementary,

middle, and high school. Students take the prescribed courses for their diploma program. They can take electives which feature advanced math and science courses, business

technology, Spanish, Art, and Music courses that include band and choir. Students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, academic challenge,

Fellowship of Christian Athletes, yearbook, Newspaper, national honor Society, Student

Council, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Cardinal Singers, Drama, and Cheerleading. Christian Education courses and programs are Integrated into the curriculum for all grades. We use

Bible stories, courses, devotions, chapel services, and special programs for students to

receive this training. Our goal is to educate a student in body, mind, and spirit; to graduate a young adult with the strength to be a Christian brother or sister who is ready to be a productive person; and instill desire for further education to better equip them to bring change to this

depressed region.”

As I wrote in one of our own Fennimore U.M.C. newsletters several years ago, one of our members sent $2,500.00 to support a young person, to be able to stay in a school dormitory, and receive their Education during the 2004-2005 school year. I felt it to be an awesome gift to an awesome mission project.

Your generous gifts can make a HUGE difference to needy people in the heart of Appalachia. Give generously as Rogena and I have decided to do.
